On Friday the 30th of August, “Stranger”, a high concept menswear boutique officially opened it’s doors with a launch party held within the store’s own unique space.
At Stranger, fashion, design, and the love of gourmet coffee, have found a striking harmony. Attendees to the launch event were treated to clothing presented like installation art, and a surprise live fashion photo shoot, in which they were the models, wearing pieces from the store’s stock.
The venue itself plays a pivotal role in the Stranger experience. Designed by Spanish architect and Furniture/Lighting designer, Juan Alfonso Ruano Canales, as a modular environment, the space itself can be reconfigured and customised for a variety of uses with most of the furniture being both aesthetically pleasing and fully functional.

It is the perfect backdrop for the progressive menswear stocked here. The Stranger man indulges in a style that sets him apart and yet denotes an inner serenity. His clothes are about new silhouettes, ideas and fashion as an ongoing conversation.
Currently, Stranger’s main floor features Nigerian designer labels such as U.Mi-1 by Gozi Ochonogor – recently of the UK and Japan; Orange Culture by promising young designer, Adebayo Oke-Lawal and is soon to feature the critically acclaimed eponymous label Kelechi Odu. Stranger also curates a fashion archive holding items of various seasons from celebrated Designers such as Yohji Yamamoto, Raf Simons and Comme des Garcons. Female items are also available from time to time.

Attached to all this is the city’s most unique little cafe dubbed a “micro cafe”. Called the Magenta room, because it looks directly out onto Stranger’s signature magenta patio, visitors can work at a communal table that is an architectural piece in itself, inspired by the work of Adam Wexler, while enjoying their own pot of coffee, brewed right beside them in a science lab like Vacuum Coffee Brewer, or enjoy the beauty of being served some of the best tea in the world in the cafe’s simple signature ceremony.
Stranger is co-owned and run by married team Yegwa and Bibi Ukpo. In an interview with the Ndani TV blog Yegwa Ukpo said, “What I hope to do is to basically create some sort of element for a potential sub culture to blossom here. I’ve always felt that we never really had true sub cultures in Nigeria because the elements just never come together- in the way that these sub cultures tend to have publications they read, music they listen to, movies they watch and places they congregate. I want to provide that through Stranger”.
Stranger is on a mission to foster and nurture modern sub culture in Nigeria. Starting with clothing.

Visits to Stranger and the Magenta Room micro-cafe are possible Monday to Saturday, 10am to 7pm but, due to size and the fluid nature of the space, are by appointment only.
