Finally, Venus and Serena Williams Land in Lagos

History was made again in Lagos on Tuesday as one of the Williams’ sisters and tennis icon, Venus Williams, finally arrived in Lagos, as widely reported in the local and international media.

Venus, the older of the two world's renowned tennis icons, arrived in Lagos, Nigeria's commercial capital about 3:35pm, aboard a Delta Airline flight. She was welcomed to the hands of officials of Connect Marketing Services Ltd and scores of journalists, who had waited anxiously outside of the arrival lounge of the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja.

Her sister, Serena, who has just clinched the WTA title which just ended in Istanbul, Turkey, arrived in Lagos at 9pm local time, on Tuesday.

From the airport, Venus was led straight to a waiting convoy of vehicles and driven to Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island where another group of Journalists had also assembled to receive the tennis queen.
Looking visibly excited about her coming to Lagos, she was accompanied by her managers, who however, did not allow her to entertain any questions from the journalists saying, Venus and Serena will speak to the media elaborately on the purpose of their visit during a Media Conference scheduled to hold on Wednesday 31, October 2012 in Lagos.

Both Serena and Venus Williams are in Lagos as part of the Nigerian leg of a planned tour of two African countries, namely Nigeria and South Africa.

They are here on the platform of Breaking The Mould (BTM) campaign, a women's empowerment programme put together by Octagon and its West Africa affiliate, Connect Marketing Services Ltd.

While in Lagos, they will participate in a number of supporting initiatives such as a tennis clinic, school visit, exhibition match and gala dinner among others.

Through these initiatives, they will be motivating, inspiring and mentoring diverse audiences in particular women and young persons as well as other categories of people to be the best they can be, regardless of obstacles on their way.
Serena and Venus Williams are considered fit as “Mould Breakers” as the story of their lives exemplifies how determination, passion, hard work and self-belief can turn dreams into reality, despite obstacles.

Nigerian sex trafficker used 'juju' to terrorise young orphans he raped after smuggling them into UK

A Nigerian smuggler who used witchcraft rituals to force children to work as sex slaves was jailed for 20 years on October 28th

Osezua Osolase, 42, tricked poverty-stricken Nigerian orphans into travelling to the UK with the promise of a better life. But the young victims were raped, sexually abused and subjected to voodoo-style rituals by a child trafficking ring.

Osolase, the linchpin of a multi-million pound global sex trafficking ring, used 'juju' magic to control his victims. He told the teenage girls they would die or never bear children if they tried to escape or revealed what had happened to them.

Caught on film: Osezua Osolase (in baseball cap) with young trafficking victims under surveillance at Stansted Airport. The children's faces have been obscured in order to protect their identities

Judge Adele Williams told Osolase: 'You are arrogant and manipulative, you are devoid of conscience, devoid of any compassion to your victims.

'You were dealing in exploitation and misery and degradation. You have been convicted on clear and compelling evidence of trafficking two girls in and out of the UK.
'Once they arrived in the UK the reality was explained to them that they were going to have to work as prostitutes.

'They were petrified that if they spoke out they would be harmed and killed.'

During the trial it emerged that Osolase raped one of the young girls knowing he had HIV. Judge Williams described this as a 'seriously aggravating' feature to his crimes.

At Canterbury Crown Court on Friday, Osolase was convicted of five counts of trafficking for sexual exploitation, one of rape and one of sexual activity with a child.

The charges relate to three girls aged 14, 16, and 17. One was raped and all three endured juju rituals, including one conducted by Osolase himself.

One feared she was being taken to another country to be used as a human sacrifice. Osolase slashed the chest of his youngest victim with a razor and rubbed black powder into her bleeding wounds.

On the surface, Osolase was a recycling worker living in a terraced house in Gravesend, Kent. But his home was a secret staging post for vulnerable teenage orphans as they were smuggled from Africa, via Britain, to several European countries.

Detectives discovered evidence that at least 28 victims were smuggled in and out of Britain over a 14-month period, earning him up to £1.5million.

FG may fly Suntai abroad for treatment

FG may fly Suntai abroad for treatment
President Goodluck Jonathan says the federal government has put arrangements in place to fly the governor of Taraba state Alhaji Danbaba Suntai abroad for treatment if it becomes necessary.
Doctor Jonathan was speaking to Muslim faithful who came to pay him the Sallah homage in the Presidential Villa. He said that the governor is stable and that he will first be brought to the National Hospital in Abuja for treatment before any other action will be taken.
The Governor escaped death on Thursday after a plane he was flying crashed in Yola, the Adamawa State capital.
The governor, his aide-de-camp and chief security officer, who were also in the plane that took off from Jalingo, the Taraba State capital, and three others, were seriously injured.
Mr Suntai, who graduated as a pilot from the Aviation College in Zaria last year, was piloting the crashed plane. This would be the second time he is surviving a plane crash
The plane, a Cessna 208, 5N-BMJ, owned by the state government, crashed at about 7.45 pm, near the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Depot, on the outskirts of Yola.
The governor, who was brought in unconscious, was first taken to Yola Specialist Hospital for treatment, but was later, moved to the better-equipped Federal Medical Centre, Yola.
A statement from the Ministry of Aviation said the aircraft had six persons, including the crew on board when it crashed.
It said the aircraft departed Jalingo for Yola and reported contact with the Yola control tower, but shortly before it landed, the pilot lost contact with the control tower, while efforts to radio the aircraft failed.

Snakes take over tenancy in Yenagoa

The high flood which left about three quarter of the capital city submerged is blamed for the high presence of the reptiles around human settlements.

Though there had been no reported death caused by snake bites, the
number of persons treated for snake bites in the last three weeks had increased tremendously, it was learnt. In spite of risk posed by the invasion of these reptiles, snake hunters have been making brisk business in the last couple of weeks as the flood sacked thousands of residents from their homes.Only last week, a swamp buggy operator clearing the canal of debris and trapped water plants narrowly escaped being killed by a giant python at the Opolo suburb of Yenagoa.

The snake was said to have wrapped itself round the swamp buggy cabin trying to reach the terrified operator but could not due to the metal and fibre-glass protection around him before it later disappeared into the canal causing the man to run for his dear life.

”We are living in fear of snake bites. The reptiles are always lurking around homes and some have started to
enter houses and putting small children in danger,” lamented John Aziba, a resident of Azikoro.

He urged the state government and the Yenagoa city council to as a matter of urgency fumigate the flooded areas so as to repel the reptiles incursion.

Agorowei Thomas, said if the problem persists he may be forced to consider moving out of the area.

“If the situation persist I may be force to move out. I cannot
continue to live in fear of snakes invading my house,” he said adding that he had on several occasions, spotted pythons and other dangerous reptiles lurking in vegetation near the natural drain.

”I’m not willing to put my life and that of my children at risk,” he said and
called on the government to act before it was too late.

ALLU 4: Students, staff no longer at ease in uniport neighbourhood

Ajienka-27-10-12

IN the aftermath of the mindless killing of the four students of the University of Port Harcourt (Uniport) by people alleged to be from Omukiri-Aluu in Ikwere Council of Rivers State, coupled with the death last week of a former corps members who just passed out of the scheme, palpable fear and insecurity now reign among students and staff of the institution, who no longer feel safe in the university neigbourhood.
Kelechi Ugonna, Lloyd Toku, Chidiaka Biringa and Tekena Erikena, popularly referred to as Aluu 4, were on October 5, this year slaughtered and burnt to death with tires hung on their neck by Aluu villagers on the suspicious of being thieves.
The barbaric killing, which was filmed and posted on the Internet went viral, eliciting reaction from across the world and infuriating other students of the institution, who protested and set over 30 cars ablaze and destroyed properties worth millions of naira in now deserted community.
The situation inflamed an already tensed situation in the area, thereby forcing the university authority to close the school indefinitely and ordered the students and staff to vacate the premises, stressing that the school would remain closed until the management was convinced that a very peaceful atmosphere for learning had returned.
Two weeks later, three persons were also confirmed killed at Rumuchakara community in Choba, one of the host communities of the university.
The Guardian gathered that a corps member, who had just passed out the previous day, Thursday, October 18, drove out with an undergraduate friend in Uniport, in companied of another mutual friend, to celebrate his successful completion of the exercise.
But he was said to have ram into a roadside shop at Rumuchakara on his way back, leading to an argument with the shop owner, who insisted on being compensated for the damages.
It was learnt that as the argument lingered, some group of boys came and shot at them and drove off, resulting in the death of three persons, just as the shop-owner ran away.
These developments, have crippled business activities in the university neigbourhood, an area that otherwise enjoyed high patronage by students.
Some students, in an interview with The Guardian, expressed fear of returning to the university community.
Adeline Woke, A 300-level student, said: “My parents are really afraid of my return to school; they have lost confidence on the security of students. Even   myself, I am equally afraid.”
A staff of the institution, who pleaded anonymity, urged the school authority and security agencies to beef up security within the university communities to allay the fears of the staff and students living there.
The Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Joseph Ajienka, regretted that the outcome of the tense situation in the neigbourhood led to the attack on innocent people living on the road to Aluu clan.
He disclosed that the mob threatened the lives of lecturers and non-teaching staff, as well as the already traumatised students residing in Aluu; hence the decision to close the institution indefinitely.
He said many staff and students no longer feel safe in the university neigbourhood, noting, however, that the university was putting measures in place to improve the relationship between the students and the host communities.
He said: “If you go to the community, they are as grieved as the university. But from our interactions with the community leaders, they have shown commitment to ensure that students and staff of the universities are protected henceforth.”
Ajienka lamented that over 70 per cent of the students live outside the campus and applauded Federal Government’s promise to improve the school system to accommodate about 50 per cent of the students in hostels, even though he said that would still not be enough.
The vice chancellor called for the speedy investigation and prosecution of the killers of the four students, insisting that only timely justice would assuage the bereaved families and the public that watched their gory lynching on charges yet to be subjected to proper legal scrutiny.
Renowned poet, Elechi Amadi, who hails from Aluu, said it was wrong to described Aluu as a ghost area.
He told The Guardian that Aluu clan has nine communities and it is only one of them, Omukiri, where the killing took place, that people have fled for fear of being arrested, and not all the Aluu clans.
Amadi maintained that normal life has been on in the other communities and everyone going about his/her business peacefully.
He stressed: “Yes, the killing is a terrible thing that should not have occurred, because in my town, if you kill somebody accidentally, you will be ex-communicated until you perform all the necessary rituals, not to talk of when you kill deliberately.
“I feel quite innocent, no matter the impression people are having about Aluu people. If you watch the video, you will know that there are no Aluu faces there.
“I am sure with time, the false image about Aluu will be cleared. The community where the incident occurred was sold out to strangers, who built houses and gave them out to students.”
Amadi condemned the killing, saying the act does no good to the society, economy, deceased and even the perpetrators.
Chief Medical Director of Oasis Specialist Hospital, Dr. Josiah Appolous, said the incident would perpetually affect the psyche of the students and staff living within the community.
“People won’t feel secure again staying in that area. The school has large expanse of land; it can enter into a partnership agreement with estate developers to build, operate and transfer hostels, where the developers will build and manage it for some time before handing over to the institution.”
Appolous, formerly with University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital and an alumnus of the institution, argued that the strategy would go a long way to ameliorate the accommodation problem facing the school and also ensure security of the students and staff.
Meanwhile, the killing has left scars in the hearts of the grieving parents of the deceased, who are yet to fully come to terms with the sudden death of their children.
Mr. Mike Toku, father of Lloyd, in an interview with The Guardian, said the heartbreaking incident is causing sleepless nights for him and his wife.
He stated: “We have not been able to sleep since the sad incident took place, especially my wife. Any time she closes her eyes, she sees her son being burnt, slaughtered and brutalised.
“It is really difficult to cope with the situation, but we pray and believe that God will give us the inner strength to overcome this eternal pain.”
He decried the ominous silence of President Goodluck Jonathan over the incident, saying the families had expected him to personally comment on the matter, rather than through his aides.
“We have been expecting the President to say something on this incident, especially as an alumnus of the university, who have bagged three degrees from the institution.
“Speaking through his aides is not enough and that cannot ease our pains,” Toku stated.

For the father of Kelechi, Mr. Messiah Biringa, he has left the killers of his son to God’s judgment.
Biringa, who could not describe the enormity of pains and traumas he has been going through, simply told The Guardian that life has not been easy with him since the incident.
“It has not been easy, but judgment is waiting for the people who killed my only son, like an animal. I pray that whosoever did this will not have peace in life.”
Similarly, parents of Tekena have been wondering about the health implications the irreparable loss may cause them in the long run.
Mr. Friday Elkanah told The Guardian that they have just been managing to put themselves together, noting that the incident has happened and they are only praying to God to give them the heart to bear the pains.
For the parents of Chidiaka, the gory pictures of the lynching of their son keep appearing to them, thereby making it difficult to overcome the situation.
He, however, prayed God to give them the grace to manage the situation.
Elkanah called on the federal government and the Judiciary to give the trial of the killers accelerated hearing to ensure that justice is not delayed or denied.
Counsel to the bereaved families, Mr. Peter Ndukwe, also expressed worry over the silence of the President over the sad incident that occurred in his former school.
He said he has lost confidence in the Nigeria Police and called for a special judicial panel of inquiry to ascertain the remote cause of the incident and the failure of the police to rescue the victims.
Thirteen suspected killers of the Aluu 4 are currently facing trial before a Magistrate Court in Port Harcourt.
At the last hearing, the Presiding Magistrate, Mr. Emmanuel Woke, ordered that the suspects be remanded in prison custody till December 20, this year, when the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) would determine whether the court is competent to handle the matter or referred it to the High Court.

Nigerian stowawy found dead in Airk Air's undercarriage

The dead body of a young Nigerian man was discovered yesterday Friday October 26th in the wheel well, the undercarriage compartment of an Arik Air aircraft, after it returned from a flight to New York, United States.

One of the airline’s officials who spoke to ThisDay said the deceased might have hidden himself in the wheel well for days and was crushed to death while the flight was airborne to the JF Kennedy Airport, New York, from the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

The official who spoke to THISDAY said the dead body was found during a check on the aircraft panel as it was being prepared for another flight and that the undercarriage compartment of the Airbus A340-500 is big enough to accommodate a person, besides the space for the tyres.

"He probably might have hidden himself there some days and died while the aircraft was on its way to New York. We found him when we were doing checks on the panel; the aircraft probably came back with him dead," the official said.

The source said that it is out of ignorance that people hide in the wheel well and plan to stowaway because "the compartment is not pressurised like the cabin of an aircraft and it is not heated, so survival is rare even if the person is not crushed by the wheels."

Pilots and aeronautical engineers familiar with the wheel well compartment said it is roomy enough to contain a human being, but it is highly unlikely that any one who hid there would come out alive after a flight that took several hours due to lack of oxygen.

The official attributed the incident to porous security at the airport, noting that "if having access to the airside is stringently prohibited, anybody that is not an official of airlines, handling companies and Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria would not gain access to the tarmac."

Another source said: "The security at the airport is very bad and that explains why somebody can gain access to the airside and inside the aircraft and no one will know.

Security around the cargo area is even worse and from there anybody can take anything into the tarmac. Now, it is a human being that is smuggled in; one day a dangerous object will be smuggled in."

THISDAY investigations revealed that stowaways connive with ground handling companies to access the airside and the wheel well.

"The handling company workers and the security operatives indulge in a lot of illicit activities at the airport and over the years there have been efforts to put a check on such excesses but every effort has so far failed," said another source.

Brazillian student sell her virginity online for charity, gets 750k

BCatarina Migliorini, a 20-year-old Brazilian college student who wants to make a "positive impact on the world," has found a curious way of doing it: Auctioning her virginity online. The winning bid of $780,000 was made by a Japanese man named Natsu, and Migliorini will reportedly donate the bulk of the money to a Brazilian initiative that builds homes for poverty stricken families in her home state in Southern Brazil.

This past month, people from all over the world bid on her chastity, from Brazilians, Americans, and Australians - but Natsu's bid of $780,000 ultimately prevailed on Oct. 24.

Catarina must then 'prove' her chastity by subjecting herself to a rigorous gynecological examination, providing the winning bidder, Natsu, with medical evidence of her virginity. Natsu will then be tested for STDs after which they will have sex in international air space aboard a flight from Australia to the U.S. to avoid local prostitution charges. Sex toys are forbidden, but a condom is compulsory

Catalina says she should not be confused with a professional sex worker. "If you only do it once in your life then you are not a prostitute. Just like if you take one amazing photograph it does not automatically make you a photographer." (Erm, not the same thing.)

I sincerely don't know if this is something to be applauded or be ashamed of. She has good intentions, but selling your body? What do you guys think?

FRSC BRUTALITY

On October 24, at about 10am, Gbolahan Olayinka and his office driver had gone to the Mobil filling station along Agege Motor Road, adjacent FRSC office, Mushin, where they usually buy fuel. On arrival, they observed that some men of the Federal Road Safety Commission where stationed there. Gbolahan and his office driver parked at a place that obviously didn’t obstruct traffic, by the gate of the filling station. Before they could turn an eyelid, one of the officers was by their car and was about to release the tube of their tyre.
Please continue...

Gbolahan challenged him for his action. That was when a slap landed on his face, then another slap from another officer. Before he could say anything in self defense, the officers – three of them – had pounced on him. He was bundled into their vehicle and taken to their office where he was handcuffed to a mast behind their office, his phone was ceased – he was held incommunicado – and beaten mercilessly. He was forced to write a letter of apology (under duress). They made it clear to him that he had no way out; he got threats that he would simply be said to have attacked an officer of the law or that he used charms on someone.
When his brother, who is a lawyer, and other family members got there, the FRSC officials threatened to beat them too. Gbolahan and his people have lugged complaints at the FRSC office in Ojodu and the Commissioner of Police. This inhuman treatment must not be allowed to stand.
You know why I share stories like this? Tomorrow, it could be me or you! The brutalization of people by officers, which we hear about everyday, have got to stop!

Star Search: Where is Paul Play Dairo?

on OCTOBER 27, 2012

When Paul Play stormed the music scene with a resurrected version of his father’s Mo So Rire in 1999, everyone knew a star had been born and then he hit us again and again the following year with hit single’s Angel of my life, Forever, You and me and his career shot for the skies, the rest you know is history.
But for long now, Paul Play has been missing in action. His illness being the number one reason that has sent him into a long hiatus and now Paul Play Dairo may have merged with history itself.
Paul Play
In an interview he granted a reporter early this year, Paul Play thankfully jumped back into our consciousness.  In that interview, he admitted his disappearance; blaming it rightly on an illness that almost wiped his name clean off the slate of music or perhaps this very world. He said he had been taking time to recuperate and was now set to launch a new album which would be in limited supply as it was going to be an ”expensive” album… (just like 2face’s)
That interview is now more than six months old and music fans as they are known world wide have really short memory.
So on Star Search this week, we ask : Where is Paul Play Dairo? And we also ask you our readers to tackle this question: why do our celebrities who once had it big in music eventually fade away?

Flood: Another woman gives birth to twins in camp

on OCTOBER 27, 2012 ·

ANOTHER set of twins has been delivered at the flood victims camp located at the Central School, Odekpe in Ogbaru local government area of Anambra State, bringing to three the number of multiple births recorded in the camps in the state since the victims were sacked by flood that ravaged their communities. Two sets of triplets had earlier been recorded at the Fr. Joseph Memorial High School, Aguleri camp where victims from Anambra West and Ayamelum were quartered.
The Chairman of Ogbaru local government Transition Committee, Mr. Steve Chukwuma, said on Thursday when Dozzy Group of Companies donated 3,000 bags of rice to the flood victims, adding that another pregnant woman at the camp was also delivered of a single baby. Both mothers were said to still be in a hospital.
The Head, Human Resources and Administration of Dozzy Group, Mr. Chima Akuchie, who presented 200 bags of rice to the camp management at Atani, Ogbaru local government area, said the donation was to ameliorate the suffering of the victims, who have lost most of their life savings.
The company also made similar donations to the victims camped at Ihiala, Okija, Aguleri, Onitsha and other parts of Ogbaru, assuring that more donations would be made in future.
The Anglican Bishop of Ogbaru, Rt. Rev. Samuel Ezeofor, who received the bags of rice on behalf of the relief camp committee, identified hunger as a major challenge to the displaced persons in camp.
He commended Dozzy Group for the support and prayed God to bless the company more so that it will continue to render help to people that were in need.
He debunked allegations of diversion of relief materials, adding however, that there was one case in which a consignment of relief materials being sent to Ogbaru was hijacked by other flood victims who told those bringing the materials that the camps in Ogbaru had been cut off by the flood.
The bishop said that 52 churches were submerged by the flood, which submerged the entire Ogbaru local government area, adding that as at Friday, 41 churches were still under water.

Abandoned baby found dead behind Unical hostel

on OCTOBER 27, 2012 ·

A two-day old baby abandoned by an unknown mother was found dead behind the Medical Students Hostel, University of Calabar near the office of the Cross River State first lady, Mrs. Obioma Liyel-Imoke.
Mrs. Imoke in the last five years had been waging war against teenage pregnancy and child abandonment through her pets’ projects and had been able to put a stop to rampant baby abandonment in the state despite alleged campaign of calumny carried recently against her.
Speaking at the scene where the dead baby was abandoned, special assistant to the Governor on Public Health/ NGO and Special Projects, Dr. Regina Ejemot-Nwadiaro said her attention was drawn to the incident by an anonymous caller which prompted her presence at the scene.
Nwadiaro said that immediately she got to the place, she called the Calabar Urban Development Authority, CUDA, who quickly responded to the call and subsequently alerted the Police.
She condemned the perpetrator of which she described as a dastardly act, callous, inhuman and outright wickedness.
According to her, “for the past five years the wife of the State Governor Mrs. Obioma Liyel-Imoke, has been championing  the stamping out of teenage pregnancy child abandonment in the state through her project; Mothers’ Against Child Abandonment (MACA).
“It is thus, disheartening that in spite of the consistent efforts by Mrs. Obioma Liyel-Imoke and the MACA team, people could still dump babies.”

Man Responsible For Arik Bomb Scare Released From Custody

The man responsible for Arik Air bomb scare has been released from police custody. The man, identified as Aminu Galadima, is an interior decorator with a history of mental illness. Mr Galadima was released after investigators were satisfied that he had no intentions of blowing up the plane and also had no ties to any terrorist group. A statement from the SSS when you continue...

This is a brief highlight of the incident that occurred on the Arik Air flight from Maiduguri to Abuja.

On Friday, 19th October, 2012, Wife of the SSG to the Borno State Government, Hajia Yachilla JIDDA, travelled to Maiduguri in company of one Aminu S. GALADIMA, an interior decorator based in Abuja to do some interior decoration work. On arrival in Maiduguri, he was lodged at Greenland Hotel. During the course of his stay, he exhibited unusual behaviour by smashing a window, and ended up with lacerations on his hands.

The SSG was contacted, and in collaboration with the Hotel management, subject was taken to Atal Hospital, also in Maiduguri, where he received treatment. His family in Abuja was contacted and they gave confirmation that GALADIMA has been mentally unstable. In addition, his elder brother who lives in the UK was contacted and he requested that subject be returned to Abuja for medical attention.

On Sunday, 21st October, 2012, he was taken to the airport to be returned to Abuja, but missed the flight. However, the Airport management was informed of his state of health, and they advised that whenever his return is scheduled, the management should be notified. Unfortunately, when GALADIMA was taken to the Airport on 23rd October for his return trip, the management of the Airport was not informed, and 10 minutes into the flight, due to slight turbulence, his condition was triggered off. Meanwhile, GALADIMA is in the custody of security forces.

This clarification has become necessary to dispel the unfounded rumours concerning the flight.

Teacher flogs 12-year-old student to death in Anambra state

A 12-year-old student of a secondary school in Awka, Anambra State, Miss Chidimma Ukachukwu, has died after she was allegedly flogged by her teacher for failing to do her homework.

A reliable source in the school told the News Agency of Nigeria in Awka on Tuesday that the girl died on Thursday last week after she was flogged. The source explained that the girl fainted after being flogged severally by a female teacher and was subsequently rushed to an undisclosed hospital, where she died.

Haven't they banned corporal punishment in Nigerian schools? Why are some teachers still flogging? WTH? Please continue...

The source also told NAN that the Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Uju Okeke, then ordered the closure of the school as a result of the incident.

A NAN correspondent, who visited the girl’s family home, soon after she was buried on Tuesday in Awka, reports that the family was in grief.

The girl’s father, Mr. Simeon Ukachukwu, confirmed the incident, saying it was a sad development. He added that it was an act of God.

But when Okeke was contacted, she denied ordering the closure of the school and said that the school was on midterm break.

NAN investigation, however, revealed that schools in the state were not on midterm break.
This fact was corroborated by an official of the Nigerian Union of Teachers in Akwa South Local Government Area.

The Chairperson of the union in the local government, Miss Buife Ndigwe, told NAN that primary and secondary schools in the state would go on midterm break next week.

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the state police command, Mr. Ralph Uzoigwe, said that the matter had not been reported to the police, but promised that it would be investigated.

Two students arrested over kidnap, rape, murder of school mate

Two students of Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, Edo State, Henry Edewo, 21 and Emmanuel Isikhuime (pictured above), have been arrested by the Police for kidnapping, raping and murdering a female student, one Mercy Peter, 21, also a student of the institution.

They were alleged to have buried their victim in a shallow grave in a forest at Ugbor village, Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State, after killing her.

Vanguard gathered that the victim, who was kidnapped on July 29, this year, was killed four days later after she was serially raped by the suspects.

They were also alleged to have continued to demand for ransom from her parents after killing her.
State Police Public Relations Officer, Anthony Airhuoyo, however, told newsmen that the police made a breakthrough in the case on October 17 when two of the suspects were arrested.

He added that a third suspect, whose name was given as Charles, was still on the run.
Airhuoyo disclosed that the suspects took the police to the spot where they buried Mercy and her corpse was exhumed. He said they were awaiting autopsy report.
