The country’s most powerful woman and President, Her Excellency, Joyce Banda agreed with the host African film makers and celebrities after an AMAA delegation paid her a visit, led by AMAA founder and Chief Executive officer, Peace Anyiam-Osigwe.
Tony Anih, the Administrative Secretary of AMAA who made this disclosure, said, the event will run for three days (March 14-17) and will not only accommodate celebrities from across Africa, but also the Malawian business community and political class.
“The government and people of Malawi are excited about the prospect of having movie icons and other players in the motion picture industry coming to the country for the event,”Anih said.
He explained that the Nomination party is an event where films that make it into the 25 categories of the awards are announced ahead of the main ceremony which is billed to hold in April this year, adding that in the last six years, AMAA has deliberately moved the nomination events from one country to the other within the continent.
“AMAA is a continental brand and reward system for motion picture practitioners.While the award ceremony usually takes place in Nigeria, we always move the nominations event from one country to another. It is our way of promoting the ‘Africanness’ of the award reward system for motion picture practitioners and also, celebrates our culture and diversity.
We have had the nominations previously in Burkina Faso, Gambia, Kenya, Ghana and South Africa. This year, we decided to come to Malawi because of the level of popularity and acceptability of African films, most especially Nollywood and Gollywood movies in Malawi,’’ said Anih.
Alongside the action, AMAA hopes to start a training programme in the first week of March for young Malawians interested in a career in audiovisual media.
