Vice-President Namadi Sambo
Two
supporters of Vice-President Namadi Sambo on Friday died on Airport
Road in Kaduna when a bus in which they were travelling crashed.
The crash, in which some other occupants
of the bus sustained varying degrees of injury, occurred around 5.30pm,
few minutes after they welcomed Sambo at the airport.
The vice-president was in Kaduna for the
Peoples Democratic Party’s North-West reconciliation meeting scheduled
for Saturday (today).
“The supporters were among those that
went to the Kaduna Airport to welcome Vice-President Namadi Sambo. Two
of them died on the spot but the injured ones were taken to the 44 Army
Reference Hospital,” a source said.
The dead persons were said to have been buried according to Islamic rites on Friday.
When contacted, Special Adviser to the
Vice President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Umar Sani, said, “Those
involved in the autocrash were supporters who came to welcome the
vice-president at the airport. They are not among the vice-president
convoy.”
A government official told newsmen that the state government would pick the medical bills of the injured persons.
Efforts to the reach the
Director-General, Media and Public Affairs to the state governor, Ahmed
Mayaike, proved abortive as calls to his phones did not connect.
