Click to Tweet: Congrats to # Durban qualifiers @tamarshamusicsa @wandic1 & @ThaReal_Flow in the @MTVBaseAfrica #BaseVJSearch #EscapeTheOrdinary @CitroenSA

Over a thousand young hopefuls turned out at the Gateway Theatre of Shopping, Umhlanga for the auditions – driven by the prospect of escaping their ordinary lives and getting through to the next round in the MTV Base VJ Search contest.

The Durban qualifiers were Bellair’s Tamasha Gambushe (@tamarshamusicsa) a 22 year old singer  who was joined by 22 year old model and radio presenter Wandile Chamane (@wandic1) from Durban North  and Lynton Harvey (@ThaReal_Flow), 22, an electrical engineering student from The Bluff  who has worked as an MC and voiceover artist.  To make the cut, the three finalists completed a range of challenges in front of celebrity judges Sizwe Dhlomo (@SizweDhlomo), comedian Joey Rasdien (@joeyrasdien) and Gagasi FM DJ Zookey Zarling (@ZarlingZookey), including presenting an unscripted link live from the MAMA red carpet, and interviewing celebrities impersonated by local comedian Sifiso Nene.

All the Durban qualifiers will be flown to Johannesburg at the beginning of August to participate in further qualifying stages of the competition with judges Bonang Matheba (@Bonang_M), Sizwe Dhlomo and Joey Rasdien.

At stake in the talent competition is a fabulous contract with MTV Base worth R 500,000, while the winner will drive away in a Citroën DS3 Cabrio worth R 315,000.  Each auditionee had just a few minutes to show off their skills and to impress the MTV Base producers before learning whether they had made it to the callbacks.

Confident MTV VJ Nomuzi Mabena presided over the auditions in Durban at the weekend, while Durban hip hop crew Big Nuz cruised by to show their support for the auditionees.

Commented Tim Horwood, Channel Director, MTV Base: “We were extremely impressed with the calibre of the VJ candidates in Durban this time around.  Our most famous VJ, Sizwe Dhlomo, comes from Durban so perhaps it’s time for some more KZN talent on our VJ roster!”

If you could not make it down to the MTV Base VJ Search auditions in person, you can still apply by sending in a video audition to MTV Base.  Please upload a 30 second video clip (.m4v, .mp4 format) to mtvvjsearch.com/, or send your clip as an attachment to basedigital@vimn.com. Or, you can head down to the Cape Town auditions (Tyger Valley Shopping Centre, Bellville – 20 July), or attend the final auditions in Johannesburg (The Place, Melrose Arch - 27 July 2013).

Highlights and funny moments from the auditions will feature on the MTV Base VJ Search Brought To You By Citroën DS3 Cabrio which will air weekly on MTV Base (DStv Channel 322) from Friday 16 August @ 17:00 CAT.

Gagasi FM, Heat, Drum, Hype, The Sowetan and Sunday World are the official media partners of the 2013 MTV Base VJ Search
