"Federal Government Is Just Giving Empty Threats" - ASUU Responds To Ultimatum

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Thursday described the threat by the federal government to sack lecturers if they don’t return to classroom as empty threat that could not hold water. The union said it is vindicated that the Federal government was not ready to implement resolutions reached with the union. ASUU said the threat will fail, adding that Nigerian public universities need 60,000 lecturers due to government’s failure to employ more capable hands into the system. The union said federal government is wasting the time of Nigerians youths by failing to perfect the resolutions and get the strike suspended.

The union added it had reasons to be wary following the failure of government to honour their promises to Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, resident doctors and other health workers who have suspended their strikes. The ASUU National Treasurer, Dr. Ademola Aremu, while responding to the government’s directive, said the threat does not hold water as it has confirmed the fears that the federal government cannot be trusted. 

The don said, “With the latest action, the federal government has shown that they are not committed to all they have been saying. We are saying that since we agreed at the meeting that the sum of 200 billion naira is for 2012 and 2013 revitalisation, the federal government should deposit same in the Central Bank of Nigerian. We are already in November and December is around the corner. If they don’t do that now, when do they want to do it? 

We are saying the non-victimization clause should be included as agreed while the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement should be included as agreed with the presidents”.
“It is a pity if the federal government is not willing to perfect the resolutions reached with union. This is why we find it difficult to trust our leaders by their words. 

How can someone be threatening to sack lecturers when universities are already short-staffed by almost 60,000. We are not in military era. The military tried it and failed. This one will fail again. They can re-open the school. ASUU did not shut down the universities. It was the management of the schools that ordered the students to go back home.”

Strange Worlds! Man Claiming To Be Wizard Crash Lands Mid-Flight.

A man believed to be in his 70s, who claimed to.be a wizard, was on Wednesday found on the banks of the Okrudu River at Kaimebre, a settlement near the Kasoa New Market in the Central Region..The man, who gave his name as Charles Atta, looked frail, pale and bore protruding breasts like that of a teenage girl. His body was smeared with mud from the bank of the river where he was found by two brothers, claimed they found the strange man crying for help.
According to him, they were flying over a church where an all-night vigil was being held when he crash- landed.“When we asked him where he was coming from, Atta told us that he was from Akuapem Akropong but was flying to attend a meeting for witches and wizards,” he said.
Charles also confessed that the two puffy protrusions on his chest were breasts taken from his 16-year- old granddaughter and that he normally borrowed them for his night activities. The two brothers said they were initially confused and bewildered by the weird sight of the man, and not knowing what to do him took him to Pink FM, a local radio station at Kasoa for help. When the strange announcement was made on radio, hundreds of people besieged the premises of the radio station to see the suspected wizard. Upon hearing the news, the Kasoa District Police dispatched a number of police personnel to the station to save the victim from being lynched.

Nigerian military bombs Boko Haram camps, many killed

Nigeria’s military has launched air strikes on Boko Haram camps in the country’s northeast killing “many” insurgents, a spokesman said Thursday of latest operation aimed at crushing the four-year Islamist uprising.
The bombardment last Sunday targeted the notorious Sambisa Forest area of Borno state, which is considered an extremist fiefdom and has become a key focus of the military’s ongoing offensive.
News of the assault was slow to emerge as the mobile phone network in Borno remains switched off, part of the military strategy to hamper communication between the militants.
“Our men have identified and destroyed some camps of terrorists along the Sambisa area and the operation was a huge success,” area army spokesman Mohammed Dole told journalists in Borno’s capital Maiduguri.
“I cannot tell you the exact number of the terrorists killed but… many of them have been killed during the airstrike which we strongly believe was precise,” he added.
A military source who requested anonymity told AFP that dozens of militants were likely to have been killed in the attack.
Sambisa area resident Bintu James, who spoke to reporters in Maiduguri, said “the airstrike started at night and raged on until Monday morning”.
Nigeria’s military has claimed a string of recent successes against Boko Haram in the northeast, the group’s historic stronghold.

The government earlier this month extended the state of emergency in the area that was first imposed in May, giving the military added powers for six additional months to flush out or kill the rebel fighters.
Boko Haram launched its uprising against the Nigerian state in 2009 and has carried out attacks across northern and central Nigeria that have killed thousands.
There is evidence that the military offensive has succeeded in cornering the militants in remote parts of the northeast, leaving them only capable of attacking soft targets.
But hundreds of civilians have been killed in recent weeks, including scores of students.
Boko Haram has said it is fighting to create a strict in Islamic state in Nigeria’s mainly Muslim north.
The United States declared the insurgent group and its linked organisation Ansaru terrorist organisations on November 13.

How Nollywood Actress Sent To Prison For Stealing Was Betrayed By Her Friends

Nollywood actress, Yetunde Akilapa who was sent to Kirikiri Prison, Apapa, Lagos around February 2013, for allegedly being in possession of 100 master key has discharged and acquitted of the theft charges brought against her.
Yetunde Akilapa was arrested around February and detained at Alade Police station in Somolu after she was accused of stealing a bunch of keys.
In a statement by her lawyer, Yetunde Akilapa said the keys she was caught with were used in her new movie, Bunmi Akata and that she was arrested after being framed by people she regarded as friends.
The case filed under Charge no F/10/13 COP v Yetunde Akilapa was dismissed for want of diligent prosecution.

Late MKO Abiola’s wife Dr Doyin Abiola reportedly arrested for fraud

According to a report by Sahara Reporters, one of late MKO Abiola’s wife, and former MD of the defunct Concord Newspapers, Dr. Doyin Abiola has been arraigned before the Federal High Court, Lagos, for fraud.
A statement signed by Police Public Relations Officer DSP Ngozi Isintume-Agu said that the Financial Malpractices Investigation Unit (FMIU) of Special Fraud Unit (SFU) said that between 2006 and 2008, as a Director of the Integrated Microfinance Bank, Dr. Abiola granted to herself without collateral and approval from the Management, the sum of N26,611,246.48.
Dr. Abiola, of 42/46 Moshood Abiola Crescent, Ikeja, Lagos, and wife of the late Chief Moshood Abiola, is one of four Managing Directors or Directors of Integrated Microfinance Bank (IMFB) located at 6A Adeniyi Jones Avenue, Ikeja, who were arrested and charged by the SFU.

The others are Akinteye Simon Ademola, Dr. Jerry Orimovuohoma and Oladapo Bello.
The SFU said the four officials of IMFB unauthorized credit facilities to the tune of N327,566,000 to themselves and other related companies without collateral and that the loans are still outstanding.  In the forensic investigation conducted by FMIU of SFU, the Directors were found wanting in the discharge of their duties while on the Board of Integrated Microfinance Bank (IMFB).

· Ademola of Plot 7, block 90, Mobolaji Ogunde Crescent, Magodo GRA Phase 2, Lagos converted the sum of N131.176 million to his personal use without approval.
· Orimovuohoma of 129B Oba Ladejobi Street, GRA, Ikeja granted unauthorized credit facility to the tune of N29,200,000.00 to himself without collateral.
· Bello of 23/25 Ijora Causeway, Ijora, Lagos recklessly granted the sum of N3,200,000.00 to himself without collateral.
“The bank liquidity was greatly affected with the sum the directors took,” the statement said.    The case comes up at the Federal High Court on December 10.

Men who let their pastor sleep with their wifes

Several husbands belonging to Zanu PF primary elections candidate for Mabvuku-Tafara and RMG Independent End Time Message church, Robert Gumbura, have continually allowed their pastor to have sex with their wives, an administrative court established on Thursday.

Gumbura who had been exposed allegedly sexually abusing his flock and dabbling in pornography which he was caught in possession of, is currently in prison awaiting trial.

An Administrative court has since banned the church from conducting meetings on fear that the same husbands would continue to allow the continuation of the illicit sexual acts deemed ‘Satanic.’

To date more than a dozen women have testified with evidence how using his position Gumbura abused them sexually at times through rape.

Speaking at a Press conference where the Apostolic Christian Council of Zimbabwe (ACCZ) announced a ban of Gumbura’s church. The investigating officer, Superintendent Ndabezinhle Moyo said that some members were still afraid of disclosing their own ordeals.

“It’s difficult to say (the exact number of all abused women) because we are dealing with those that have volunteered to come. Some might have been abused and they are not opening up because they are bound by the church doctrine. So far, we have quite a number of people who volunteered, about 10 or so. The matter is still under investigation,” Moyo said.

ACCZ president Archbishop Johannes Ndanga said its preliminary investigations have established that both married and single women were abused at the bishop’s whim and the church showed “Satanic leanings”.

Ndanga stated, “there is also clear evidence of acts of Satanism because the church was actually agreeable to the actions of their bishop and up to this time they are still defending him and they believe he was acting on behalf of the Lord Almighty,”

He said the committee watched videos of church services in which Gumbura claimed to be God and told congregants that if he told them to eat human flesh, they should do so because it was a divine directive.

“Each time he raped married women, he said it was God blessing their marriages. Even the men whose wives were raped are still members of the church. They still believe what happened to their wives was by the order of God,” he said.

Meanwhile Archbishop Ndanga has banned RMG church meetings saying access to the premises is now prohibited and church members are no longer allowed to conduct meetings of any kind.

The artistry of Pastor Gumbura in brainwashing his flock is reminiscent of that of David Koresh of the Branch Davidians whose 76 members died in a standoff with Police in Waco in 1993. Like Gumbura, Koresh too sexually assaulted some of his followers including children as young as 10years old.

Baby found dead in a bag in lagos

A newborn baby boy wrapped in white clothing placed inside a polythene bag was dumped at the back-yard of a compound in Jemtok Street, along Ago-Palace Way, Okota, Lagos.

The baby was believed to have been dumped by an unknown person, probably a mother. He was discovered at around 8p.m. on November 24, 2013, Sunday.

It was unfortunate that the baby was already dead before it was seen. The baby allegedly died of suffocation, while placed in the bag, due to lack of ventilation.

Whoever committed such crime, he/she must get the punishment according to law, and according to God’s will as well.

Our correspondent caught him complaining to a member of his family that the groom’s family seem to have hijacked the whole ceremony.

‘The groom’s family have over taken everything and it is not supposed to be so‘, he complained angrily to the family member who was giving him audience.

Jonathan returns today, says alcohol not cause of illness

The Presidency has stated that President Goodluck Jonathan will return to Nigeria on Sunday evening (today) from London, where he attended the 15th meeting of the Honorary International Investors Council.

Presidential spokesman, Reuben Abati, who announced the President’s return via a statement, also disclosed that Jonathan’s illness while in London was due to severe abdominal pains.

 He added that doctors who examined and treated the President  certified him fully fit to return home and continue his official duties.

He said, “The President is scheduled to depart from London at about 1400 hours GMT and arrive at the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport at about 2000 hours.

“He seizes this opportunity to thank all Nigerians once again for their sympathy, support and prayers for his quick recovery following the announcement of his indisposition,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, Jonathan on Saturday denied reports in a section of the media that his health broke down in London after engaging in drinking spree during a bash organised to mark his 56th birthday.

He said contrary to the claim, he observed his birthday on Wednesday quietly with better part of the day spent on air from Abuja to London while the remaining part was spent in the privacy of his hotel room.

The clarification was contained in a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati.

Jonathan said the section of the media with the wrong information were not beyond the bounds of legal action for libel and wilful defamation of the character and reputation of the President “who has courageously stepped forward to serve his country.”

The President, however, thanked  Nigerians, including his supporters, friends and political associates  who expressed and conveyed their sympathies and solidarity with him, through various means

ASUU Strike Update: After NEC Meeting, ASUU Set To Suspend Strike

Academic activities may pick up next week in the nation’s public universities as the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) would this weekend hold its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting to take a position on the on-going five- month-old strike. Saturday Sun source revealed that national officers and branch chairmen of ASUU have arrived at the venue of the crucial meeting to deliberate on the industrial action. 


The industrial action, which enters 144 days today, took off on July 1, 2013 and has crippled academic activities in federal and state universities. Ahead of the NEC meeting, some members of ASUU in two universities, Enugu State University (ESUT) and University of Agricultural Abeokuta (UNAB) had announced that their institutions would open for academic activities. Also, the authorities of the University of Lagos despite the on-going strike have started the screening/registration for new students offered admission for the 2013/2014 academic session. 

The source told our Correspondent that ASUU is aware of public concern about the situation in the universities and that NEC would do the needful after deliberating on reports from the outcome of the various congress. According to the source, having mourned and honoured late Professor Festus Iyayi, who died while on his way to Bayero University Kano (BUK) for a NEC meeting by suspending the meeting, ASUU leadership felt it was ripe to hold the crucial meeting.

He refused to give insight to the outcome of the NEC meeting but stressed that the decision would be fair based on the various congress resolutions of the meeting its leaders held with President Goodluck Jonathan. Expectations were high before the postponed ASUU NEC meeting because of the death of its former national President that the industrial action would be suspended after the Federal Government shifted ground on the demands of the university lecturers.

Recalled that President Jonathan had to intervene after the Vice President, Namadi Sambo and the chairman, Implementation and Monitoring Committee led by the Benue State Governor, Gabriel Suswam failed to produce positive results. At the crucial November 5 meeting with ASUU leaders in Aso Rock, the government agreed to provide N220billion yearly for the next five years and improve on the amount to be released for the contentious Earned Allowance.

The member representing the Ilaje/Ese Odo Federal Constituency of Ondo State, Honourable Raphael Oloye Nomiye is dead. The lawmaker slumped and died in Abuja in the early hours of Saturday.
Nomiye, 50, fondly referred to as “Groovy” was born to the Royal family of Chief & Mrs. Jeremiah Sego Nomiye at Molutehin in Ugbo ward VI in IIaje Local Government Area of Ondo State on the 6^th February, 1963. He was an alumnus of the University of Benin where he bagged a bachelor’s degree (BA.) in public Administration.

16-Year-Old Girl Killed In Her Bedroom After Mother Lets Two Strangers Into Their Home

He walked into the house as an innocent teenager, but walked out a killer.
Brandon Henry Williams, a 17-year-old boy from Jonesboro, Georgia, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter after killing 16-year-old V’ondra Olivaria in her bedroom.
According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Williams and a 20-year-old Justin Vitto walked into V’ondra’s home on Saturday evening.

V’ondra’s mother, Yolanda Rincon greeted the two males at the door, with the impression that they were harmless.

“He shook my hand and not even five minutes later, I heard a gun go off and my baby was gone,” Rincon explained to WSB-TV.

After the gunshot went off, Rincon ran up stairs to find Williams holding a gun, with fright in his eyes. The two boys quickly fled the house, leaving Rincon helplessly holding on to her daughter’s lifeless body.
Rincon believes that Brandon did not intend to kill V’ondra.

“He took my daughter’s life and he took his own life. Two lives gone for nothing,” said Rincon.
Late Sunday, Williams was charged with involuntary manslaughter, possession of a handgun to someone under the age of 18, criminal trespassing and obstruction. Williams also admitted to accidentally shoοting the 16-year-old V’ondra. Since Monday, the 17-year-old has been held without bail in the Clayton County Jail.
Police are currently questioning Vitto, and are not clear on whether he will be charged in V’ondra’s killing.
As a mother of four, Rincon described her second oldest child V’ondra as a bubbly, caring teenager who loved Instagram. The once 11th grader attended North Clayton High School.
Rincon says Williams never once met her daughter before that Saturday night.

‘Dead’ Baby Resurrects, Screams At Chinese Funeral Parlour Moments Before Cremation

Hospital: Anhui Provincial Children's Hostpial where a baby boy, who had been pronounced dead but was found alive before cremation, is being treated in Hefei city, east Chinas Anhui province

A funeral home discovered a baby was alive two days after he was pronounced dead at a hospital in eastern China. Shocked funeral home workers heard the baby crying and discovered he was alive at a funeral parlour in Hefei. The boy has severe deformities and the hospital treated him until Monday, when his condition deteriorated. 

At less than one month old, his parents agreed to end his medical treatment at Anhui Provincial Children's Hospital. Authorities revoked the license of the doctor who mistakenly declared the newborn boy dead, the health department in Anhui province said. Authorities have ruled that the doctor - identified only by the surname Cha - was negligent and that hospital's newborn division was chaotic. 
 
'Because the baby still had life signs, we continued to give him transfusion to maintain his life for humanitarian reasons,' a hospital staff member told state news agency Xinhua. The baby was born with a 'congenital respiratory system malformation', the report added. The boy remains in critical condition.

According to P.M. News, the police at Idimu, Lagos, western Nigeria have arrested the wife of a pastor, Mrs. Angela Uzoma, for pouring hot water on her sister. She was arraigned before the Ejigbo Magistrates’ Court for injuring the teenager. The 28-year old housewife who is also the women’s leader in her husband’s ministry at Shasha allegedly poured hot water on Chidinma Chukwu, causing her serious injury.


The incident happened at their residence at Ifelodun Street Orisunmbare, Shasha, Lagos State, western Nigeria. We gathered that the pastor’s wife accused the 14-year old Chidinma of selling only few pawpaws on the fateful day. Angela, according to the police investigating officer (IPO), had warned Chidinma to ensure that she did not come back home without selling all the pawpaws packed in her tray for sale that day. Unfortunately, she did not sell everything and Angela became angry, accusing her of being too playful.

The culprit tried to hide the incident by refusing to take her to a hospital. Instead, she arranged with a nurse who was treating her at home. The matter came into the open when a samaritan heard of it and reported to the police at Idimu. Angela was promptly arrested. Narrating what happened, Angela said she did not intentionally pour water on her, adding that she brought her from the village to train her and she was hawking pawpaw to assist the family to feed.
 “It is the devil’s work and I regret what happened. I want to settle this matter out of court,” she begged.

Her husband, Pastor Paul Uzoma, described the incident as unfortunate. “When I heard of it, I blamed my wife and told her she went too far,” he said. He, however, said his wife meant well for the girl and that was why she brought her to Lagos to train her. When she was arraigned in court on Tuesday, she pleaded not guilty. The presiding magistrate, Mr. P.E Nwaka granted her bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum. She was ordered to be remanded in prison custody at Kirikiri, Apapa when she couldn’t fulfill the conditions attached to her bail. The matter has been adjourned till 12 December, 2013

33-Year-Old Father Sexually Assaults His 20-Month-Old Daughter In Ghana

Seth Onomah, a 33-year-old father has been arraigned after he allegedly fingered his 20-month-old daughter while she was spending a few days with him.
According to report, the baby’s mother had died in 2011 and her grandmother took custody of her. Onomah went to Juvenile curt to complain that he denied access to his baby and was given the opportunity of seeing her on the last week of every month.
On July 27, 2012, Onomah took the baby to spend a few days with him and promised to return her to the grandmother but did not do so. His claimed the baby was sick and recuperating so he refused to return her.
The grandmother then went to the juvenile court and he was ordered to return the baby.
He later returned her to the grandmother together with some medicine. The grandmother took her home, and while bathing her in the evening the baby started crying when she wanted to wash her vagina. When the grandmother checked the child’s vagina, she realized that something was wrong.
She proceeded to lodge a complaint with the police who gave a form for the girl to be treated and a report to be submitted on her.
Onomah was dragged to court along with his nephew, Richard Boamah and brother-in-law, Isaac Denkyira.

They were charged with indecent assault in a court presided over by Sedina Agbemava and they denied any wrongdoing.
They were remanded in police custody to reappear in court on December 18, 2013.
Narrating events leading to the arrest of the accused person, Detective Inspector Kofi Atimbire said the complainant is Margaret Ayeh, the grandmother of the victim with whom the baby lives at Ablekuma while the accused persons are relatives and live in the same house at Oblogo.
Explaining further, he said after the complainant reported the incident and the report was issued, the case docket was sent to the Attorney-General for advice and upon that the suspects were arraigned.

END TIME: Man Caught Stealing Offering Inside Mountain of Fire Church

 
A man, who apparently has no job to enable him feed himself, has been sentenced to spend one year in prison after he was found guilty of stealing from the Mountain of Fire and Miracles church.
Police prosecutor, Sergeant Simon Ibrahim told the court that the convict was a habitual offender and had stolen from the same church in 2012. Sergeant Ibrahim said:
“He stole from the same church last year. He was charged before a different court and was sentenced to one year imprisonment. In fact, he was just released from prison just last week. I don’t think he is ready to change.”
36yrs old Ademola Ayeni was sentenced on Monday after he was convicted on charges of theft for making away with the offerings of the church members. He had been previously convicted of the same offence after he stole from the same church last year.
Magistrate Khadijat Mustapha convicted Ayeni for the offence without an option of fine, saying the sentence is meant to serve as a deterrent to those who might want to engage in similar acts.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Sergeat Simon Ibrahim, told the court that (Pastor) Ojo Oyeyemi of Mountain of Fire and Miracles Church, Utako, reported the matter at the Utako Police Station on November 15.
Ibrahim said the convict criminally trespassed into the church just after they had concluded church service and stole an offering bag containing N50,800. He also stole two cheques worth N150,000 and N50,000.

Anonymous Tipster Claims Festus Iyayi Was Shot By Policemen In Kogi’s Governor Convoy

An anonymous tipster has confided in SaharaReporters that Festus Iyayi, a former president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), was actually shot by policemen in the convoy of the Kogi State Governor, Captain Idris Wada, prior to the road accident in which he supposedly died last week. The source claimed that the injuries found on the late writer’s chest were consistent with gunshot injuries and that a bullet did pierce his heart. One Dr. Paul Amodu of the Specialist Hospital in Lokoja had revealed that Professor Iyayi died after “something” pierced his chest, but he didn’t specify what it was. SaharaReporters was first to reveal last week said the popular professor and writer died in a collision with a security vehicle in Governor Wada’s convoy. Sources at ASUU said they had dissuaded Iyayi’s family from a “rushed” burial, as they suspected foul play. One of the sources recalled that another former president of ASUU, Dr. Mahmood Tukur, also died in suspicious circumstances on the Kaduna-Zaria highway, with the police claiming he died of an asthma attack because he ate pepper which, they claimed, triggered it. SaharaReporters spoke with Prof. Iyayi’s son, Omole, regarding the latest information, but he said the family was unaware, and that they do not even have the autopsy performed yet. A press statement issued by the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA)signed by its President Osahom Enabulele has previously called for a special inquiry into Professor Iyayi’s death but the statement didn’t say if the doctors found that Iyayi may been shot as alleged by the anonymous source.

Golden Eaglets defender, Friday Njengo, is dead

Nigeria’s football family was thrown into mourning on Tuesday after news filtered in that former Golden Eaglets’ defender, Friday Njengo, who had been in intensive care at the National Hospital, Abuja for more than nine months, had died.
Njengo, a regular with the Manu Garba team during the qualifying series for the 2013 CAN U-17 Championship, during which the Eaglets thrashed Niger Republic, Guinea and Mali home-and-away, was involved in an accident with team-mate Adamu Abubakar while traveling from Jalingo to Calabar for the team’s first phase of final camping for the African Championship. The accident occurred on February 3.
“This is very sad news. We had looked forward to the boy eventually recovering to be part of the team again as the squad progresses to the next level. It is a thing of sorrow to lose such a huge talent this way,” NFF General Secretary, Barrister Musa Amadu, said that
While Njengo sustained head injury in the accident, goalkeeper Adamu Abubakar was luckier and was discharged after a few days. NFF President, Alhaji Aminu Maigari, who was at the Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa, had ordered that Njengo be moved from the Federal Medical Centre, Jalingo to the National Hospital, Abuja two days after the crash.

At the National Hospital, an operation was performed on the player and he was thought to be recovering, though still suffering from memory lapse, until his death on Sunday night.
The Nigeria Football Federation stated on Tuesday that burial arrangements would be announced after consultations with the family.
