Policemen jailed for losing rifles to free food in Lagos

Three policemen have bagged two years imprisonment after losing their rifles because of free food.
An Ebute-Metta Magistrate’s Court, Lagos, sentenced them over negligence, which led to the stealing of their service rifles.

Sergeant Felix Okwa, 47; Corporal Ogu Romanus, 46, and Constable Sunday Okoh, 34 will also serve a six-month community service after completing their jail term.

The incident happened on December 12 at 11;30 pm when the policemen attached to Ishashi Police Division of Lagos State Police Command, who were said to be on patrol were invited by an unknown guest for dinner at Regional Hotel, also in Ishashi. The guest identified as Kezzy claimed he wanted to reward them for a job they did for him. When they honoured the invitation, he was said to have fed the policemen with food laced with drugs. They slept off and their weapons, three AK-47 rifles and 90 live ammunition were stolen.
The unconscious policemen were arrested and later charged to court after the hotel manager reported the matter at the Ishashi Police Station.
