Martin Kruger, a 35 year old farm manager from Dewetsdorp
accidentally crushed his toddler daughter to death while reversing his
pick-up truck.
According to report, he did not see his daughter Anika follow him outside when he left the house at about 5pm on Monday to go into town.
“I looked around to see where she was, because I knew she was always outside. I didn’t see her so I assumed she was watching TV with her sisters.”
Kruger had reversed his truck about two metres when he heard a “strange noise” and immediately knew something was wrong. He got out and found his youngest daughter lying next to the wheel.
She was rushed to the nearest doctor but was already dead.

Mercy Johnson Sends Out A Special Birthday Message In Celebration Of Her Birthday

Today, I thought of many things I
would love to have as birthday gifts and the many dreams I am still
pursuing. In all of this I’m not losing sight of the fact that if not
for God I might have ended up on the street like the many kids and young
adults begging for food and some prostituting to make ends meet.
If we know the circumstances that
force some of these people on the street, we would spare a thought for
them. I am where I am today purely by the grace of God and the grace of
people who believed in me from the word go.
Recently, I was at the Boys Reform
Home, Oregun, Lagos, the discussion I had with the principal Mr. Kotun
and much later with the Special Adviser in charge of al lremand homes in
Lagos set me thinking about the boys and girls on the street. They have
dreams too.
Can they fulfill those dreams on the
street? The answer will likely be no; because I won’t be where I am
today if I ended up on the street.
For this reason, Mercy Johnson
Foundation will be doing a lot to get kids off the street. We are not
asking people for money or donation, I will do all I can with the
resources God has given me, and with the support of my husband to help
get these kids off the street and set them on the path where they can
begin to pursue their dreams.
I want to plead with people, fans,
friends and colleagues to spare a thought for the children on the
street. We can begin by educating people around us, parents, the
children and people in charge of children (Oga-house help relationship,
teacher-student relationship, and others) on the need to treat every
child like the future of Nigeria depends on it.
And truth be told, our future will
not be all that enjoyable if we let the scourge of ‘street-children’
fester. By then, the rich will begin to cry. I learnt Lagos State
Government has 11 homes where most children picked from the streets are
kept, reformed and reunited with their families after counseling.
That is an initiative Mercy Johnson
Foundation will be supporting and beyond that we will be going to
different states to help spread the message-Get kids off the street,
save the future. From tomorrow, I will begin to replay some of the
lessons I learnt at the boys’ reform home and we all can contribute to
getting the kids off the street.

How 10-Year-Old Boy Was Lured And Used For Rituals In Niger State
Niger State Police Command on Wednesday arrested three persons for allegedly beheading a 10-year-old boy in Amale Village in Paiko Local Government Area of the state for rituals.
It was gathered that one Salleh Ibrahim lured the victim and took him from Amale to two of his accomplices, Usman Sarki, and Dantala Doma.
During police interrogation, Sarki confessed that he was contracted to bring the boy’s head by one Gajere who was on the run for money-making ritual.
He said he found the boy along Amale road. “I asked him where was going, he said he was going to his house. I offered to help him. So I took him on my bike to Sarki’s house. “Sarki and I later took him to Doma’s house where he wasbeheaded with a cutlass.
During investigation, the severed head of the boy was found in Salleh’s house After the discovery of the head in Salleh’s house, the suspect took the police to an area near river Erena in Shiroro Local Government Area of the state and that’s where the headless body of the boy was found buried in a shallow grave.
Salleh later took the police to the residence of the other two accomplices.
The state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Richard Oguche, said investigation into the matter had commenced, adding that the suspects would be arraigned in court at the conclusion of the investigation.
He said the command had directed all police out posts within Kaffin-koro division and the Divisional Police Officer in Kaffin-koro to reach out to the community leaders in the area to know if there was any reported case of a missing child but no such report had been received.
He called on parents to always monitor the movement of their children so as not to fall into the hands of ritual killers.

Mysterious fire engulfs residence, kills three family members in Benue
TRAGEDY struck in the early hours of Tuesday in Makurdi, Benue State capital as a mysterious fire engulfed a two-bedroom flat, claiming the lives of one Terhemba Makka, a senior staff of the Nigerian Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) his wife and four-year-old daughter.
An eyewitness in the area, one Tavershima told The Guardian that the fire started at about 2 am yesterday when power supply was restored by Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) to the area.
According to the eyewitness: “We heard people shouting fire, fire from inside the house. We heard someone screaming ‘help me, help me.’ The flame and smoke was too much. But the house has only one entry door with burglary proofs supporting the windows and doors so it became very difficult for any one to go in and rescue any one of them.
“While some youths were pouring water on the fire, others struggled hard to break a portion of the house and managed to rescue the deceased’s son. Even before men of the fire service could arrive the scene, the entire house had been completely engulfed by fire,” he intimated.
The eyewitness said the rescued nine year-old-son of the deceased that was taken out of the house through a broken portion was quickly rushed to St. Theresa’s hospital, located in High Level for medical treatment.
Some of the sympathizers at the scene of incidence, however, decried the attitude of officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps, (FRSC) who they said came to the scene of the incident but refused to convey the corpses to the mortuary on flimsy excuse that they lacked gloves and stretcher to do so.
The Guardian further learnt that the late Makka who moved in to the area barely six months ago, had early this year buried his first wife who also died mysteriously.

would be 72 years old on October 10.
Eighteen years after he was executed with eight other Ogoni leaders by the military government of late General Sani Abacha, eminent Nigerians said, yesterday, that the issues he fought for, such as under-development, marginalisation of minority ethnic groups and devastation of the environment have not been resolved.
They spoke at the 72nd post-humous birthday and launch of a book entitled The 3-Dimensions of the Ogoni Revolution and the Unanswered Questions, organised in Saro-Wiwa’s honour by the Niger Delta Youth Movement, NDYM; Middle Belt Youth League, MBYL; Ogoni Solidarity Forum, OSF and Ogoni Economic Forum, OEF.
They also urged the Federal Government to immortalise Saro-Wiwa just like the Americans have done to Martin Luther King, Jnr.

Stowaway survival a miracle – Aviation experts
LAGOS — Experts in the aviation industry have expressed surprise over the survival of a teenager stowaway, DanielOikhena, who hid in the wheel well of Arik Air aircraft used for flight W3 544 from Benin Airport to the Murtala Muhammed Airport, MMA, Lagos.
It will be recalled that the teenager apparently sneaked into the aircraft main wheel well at the Benin Airport after he had beaten security checks at the airport, but he was arrested by Arik Air personnel and handed over to Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, security upon arrival at the Murtala Muhammed. Airport, Lagos when he came out of hiding.

He further noted that the boy’s survival could be as a result of the short distance that the plane flew, noting that from Benin to Lagos airport was just 35 minutes of flight time.
He said that the aircraft did not ascend high into the sky as it only flew at 10,000 feet above sea level.
Aligbe, however, stressed that if the distance was a long haul flight, like from Lagos to London, the teenager would have frozen to death, stressing that the higher an aircraft ascends into the sky, the cooler the nose wheel apartment becomes.
He said that was the major reason why people that stowed away from Lagos to other parts of the world are found dead upon arrival at their destination.
In such cases he said, the airline staff often found the corpses of such people on landing.
It was a miracle
He said: “There is no aviation experts that can give you a satisfactory explanation on the incident. The nostril of the aircraft is not designed for anybody to stay in. The boy’s survival was miraculously done by God because the aircraft could have crushed the boy when the plane was retracting its tyres.”
“Although the hole is a bit wide, it is not meant for anybody to stay in. There is no scientific explanation to it, there is no aviation expert or technology that could explain how that boy survived onboard that aircraft.”
He survived because of his size —Ore
Also speaking, Chairman of Aviation Round Table, ART, Captain Dele Ore, explained that the boy survived because of his size and more so, the flight was for a short distance which was not more than 10,000 feet.
Ore said based on the small size of the boy, he was not crushed to death on the wheels where he hid himself.
The ART chairman further said had the flight been a place like United States of America, the plane would have flown above 25,000- 35000 feet, the boy would have died in five minutes because the place he hid himself was not a pressurized area.
Group volunteers to sponsor his education
Meantime, De Raufs, a volunteer group extolling the virtues of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, Governor of Osun State, has volunteered to sponsor 15-year-old stowaway teenager, Daniel Oikhena, who hid in the tyre compartment of Arik Air flight from Benin to Lagos.
In a statement signed by the Director General of the group, Comrade Amitolu Shittu, the group is ready to give scholarship to Daniel up to university level and help him realise his dream of travelling by air legitimately.
Shittu said: “Genius and ambitious citizen of our country must not be suffocated on the alter of political and bureaucratic enforcement. The little boy’s ambition should be nurtured through qualitative education, and the group is ready to give the boy all the necessary support to make his dream a reality.
“We sincerely willing to offer him the scholarship to encourage thousands of teenagers who are cerebral and ambitious. The leaders in Nigeria fail on their part to see the potential of the little boy. Therefore, De Raufs takes up the responsibility to safe the future of this great boy and not turning him to criminal.”
