FT: West Ham 2-2 Manchester United

A late Robin van Persie strike earned Manchester United a point in a game against West Ham

A stunning Mohamed Diamé strike had given West Ham hope of a stunning victory, after Antonio Valencia had cancelled out Ricardo Vaz Tê’s opening goal, only for the Dutchman to step up and make it 2-2 with 13 minutes remaining.

Vaz Tê gave the Hammers the lead in the 16th minute, when he headed home from close-range after a fine Andy Carroll knock-down from a Matt Jarvis cross.
But the home side could not build on their opening goal and United equalised on the half hour mark, as a lightning quick breakaway led to Shinji Kagawa squaring the ball to Valencia in the six-yard box. The Ecuador international made no mistake from close-range.
But Diamé restored the Hammers lead in spectacular fashion in the 54th minute, as he received the ball on the edge of the box and curled a fierce drive past David de Gea and into the bottom corner to make it 2-1.
Wayne Rooney then looked set to level proceedings in the 66th minute, when he was found unmarked in the box by van Persie, but his resulting effort was cleared off the line by Gary O’Neil.
But United did equalise in the 77th minute, as Kagawa’s initial shot fell to the lurking van Persie after hitting the post, and the Dutchman smashed home from close-range to level proceedings and earn United a point.
