President Goodluck Jonathan, former
Nigerian presidents, and other leaders are attending the National
Council of States meeting currently taking place today, July 8th, at the
Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The former presidents who are at the meeting are: Ibrahim Babangida, Olusegun Obasanjo, Shehu Shagari, Yakubu Gowon, Ernest Shonekan, and Abdusalami Abubakar. Muhammadu Buhari was absent.
It’s the second time the meeting is being held this year.
The
National Council of States, is the highest advisory body to the serving
president. It consists of “the Vice President, former heads of states,
governors of the 36 states including Abuja’s minister, former and
present Chief Justices of the Federation, the Senate President, the
Speaker of the House of Representatives, and the Inspector General of
Police,” according to Sahara Reporters.
Among the issues discussed at the meeting include a replacement for outgoing Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar - whose tenure ends this month. Abubakar has been in the force for 35 years.
Other issues discussed are yet to be revealed.
