Barcelona are only interested in selling the striker not loaning him out and shifting Chamakh, Arshavin, Djourou and Squillaci will free up vital cash
Arsene Wenger is ready to use cash generated by Arsenal's winter clear-out to fund a January push to sign Barcelona striker David Villa.
The Spain international, 31, is believed to fancy a move to the Premier League, with Barca likely to accept offers of around £15million.
Tottenham, Chelsea and Liverpool have all enquired about Villa, but Spanish giants Barca have rebuffed any approaches relating to a loan move and say they are only interested in a permanent transfer.
Barcelona insist they have not had a concrete offer from Arsenal but are aware of their interest.
Sources in Spain believe a bid may be coming, and they are willing to do business.
Arsenal will have the cash thanks to their clear-out, with Marouane Chamakh being loaned out and Andrey Arshavin, Johan Djourou and Sebastien Squillaci all set to go in the next few weeks, freeing up cash for transfers and to use on wages.
The Gunners' hierarchy have made outgoings their priority.
Chamakh has joined West Ham on loan, Arshavin has had negotiations with Reading, Djourou is wanted by Hannover and misfit Squillaci will be offered a free transfer.
Those departures will allow Wenger to try to rebuild his squad with major signings in January.
Wenger admitted this week he wants a striker to complement, and offer an alternative to, target-man Olivier Giroud and Villa fits the bill.
It would be seen as something of a risk because of Villa's recent injury record but he has big-match pedigree and also has a Spain team-mate, Santi Cazorla, to ease his arrival at Arsenal.
Arsenal also have a relationship with Barca, having sold them Alex Song last summer and Cesc Fabregas a years before that.
Wenger knows a move for Villa would be popular with the fans, after this week admitting they all want to see proven names brought in rather than unproven players.
