FOCUS ... Rio Ferdinand
And the United star has warned his team-mates not to fall into a different trap this time — by thinking the title race is over just because Robin van Persie is scoring goals for fun.
Ferdinand is as excited as anyone by the impact Van Persie has made at United. The Dutch striker has already netted 19 goals since his £22million summer switch from Arsenal.
But the defender, 34, sounded a note of caution after United retained their seven-point lead at the top by crushing Wigan 4-0 on Tuesday. He said: “Up to now Robin has done fantastically well. But the job is still there to be done.
“We are not at the end of the season yet. No medals have been handed out. We don’t want to jump about too much.
“Last year we paid too much attention to City because it was the first time they had challenged properly and there was a lot of focus on Manchester.
“But we have to make sure we keep our own house in order and make sure we keep ticking off the games.
“We don’t have to focus on anyone else, just ourselves.
“No matter how you win the league, it is always mainly down to a group of players rather than one individual. Of course, RVP is an important player. The manager saw something in him and made it his mission to buy him.
“At the moment, thankfully, he is doing what he came here to do. He is not only scoring goals, he holds the ball up well and brings others into play. He does a fantastic job.
“It is easy for people to settle in here. We have a great bunch of players. We have a great squad and there is a great ambience in the squad.
“It is a great place for players to come to if you are willing to work hard and be a member of the team.”
Ferdinand also believes United have to maintain the momentum that saw them take 10 points from four games over the holiday period.
He added: “It was important for us to get the points on the board.
“You have to use your squad wisely and the manager has done that perfectly.”
Van Persie, 29, netted twice against Wigan and team-mate Ryan Giggs had a close-up view of the striker’s first as he bamboozled defender Ivan Ramis before curling home.
The Welshman said: “I was next to Robin when he put it in and it’s the technique, the calmness and everything about the goal which epitomises him.
“We are really pleased he is here and he is getting better and better.”
