The first baby of 2013 at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, Idi Araba, Lagos, was delivered at 10.20 am Tuesday morning by 36-year-old Mrs. Emilyana Nwoye through Caesarean Section. The healthy baby girl, who tipped the scales at 2.7 kg, was the cynosure of all eyes at the neonatal unit of the tertiary health institution after the delivery.
The baby’s mother did not speak about the experience as she was said to be recovering from the Caesarean Section when Vanguard visited the neonatal unit thatTuesday morning, however, the baby’s father, Mr. Evaristus Nwoye, expressed gratitude for being blessed with the first baby of the new year.
“I am excited, my heart is full of joy. This is the best gift of the new year for me,” he stated in a chat.
Evaristus, a trader on Wey Street, Mushin, said prior to the birth of the new baby, he and his wife, Emilyana, already had four children, three girls and one boy. “This new baby is our fifth child, and it is also going to be the last for me,” he declared.
Also in a chat, LUTH Chief Medical Director, Professor Akin Oshibogun, expressed joy at the development. “This baby is the first baby to be born in this hospital in 2013. Both mother and child are doing okay. She weighed 2.7 kg and I am happy about the development. I am happy about the work that is going on in this hospital especially as it concerns safety of mother and child.
The significance of the baby of the year was to draw attention to the services provided by the health institution. “It helps us rededicate ourselves to the production of that service. Right from the first day of the year we normally have a lot of attention on our maternity services.
“For the family it helps emphasise the importance of family life and encourage the parents to ensure they take care of the newborn baby.”
