Barber stabs graduate to death during Chelsea/Atletico match

Saheed

When on Wednesday 29-year-old Saheed Badmus went to a viewing centre on Lamina Street, Egbe, Lagos State, to watch the UEFA Champions League semi-final match between Chelsea Football Club and Atletico Madrid, little did he know that was the last match he would ever watch.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the graduate of Ekiti State Polytechnic was stabbed to death by a barber identified only as Yemi, during an argument that broke out at the viewing centre.
Our correspondent, who visited the scene on Thursday, observed a large crowd on the street talking about the incident.
Saheed’s friends took our correspondent to a portion of the street where spinkles of Saheed’s blood could be seen.
They told PUNCH Metro that passions were high at the viewing centre as most of the Chelsea fans were desperate to see their team qualify.
It was learnt that during the match, Saheed stood up and Yemi shouted at him and told him to sit down as he was blocking him from viewing the match on the screen.
An elderly man was said to have cautioned Yemi against shouting, but Yemi insulted the elderly man.
A friend to the deceased, Muyideen Waheed, told our correspondent that an argument then ensued between the barber and Saheed.
He said, “Yemi was shouting and one elderly man told him to keep quiet, but he shouted the man down. Saheed then cautioned against shouting at an elderly man. Yemi attacked him.
“The owner of the centre pushed both Yemi and Saheed out of the place and locked them out.”
It was learnt that once they got outside, Yemi picked up a bottle from a nearby pub and stabbed Saheed.
It was learnt that as Saheed ran for his life, Yemi chased him and then stabbed him in the face.
Waheed told PUNCH Metro that when some of the viewers came out, they saw the deceased’s lying in a pool of blood.
He said they rushed him to two hospitals, but he was rejected.
He said, “There was power failure and everywhere was dark. Most of us were inside the viewing centre, so we did not hear Saheed scream. When we came out, we saw him lying in a pool of blood. We rushed him to Obeeh Hospital, but he was rejected. We then took him to Bisalam Hospital, but he was referred to Igando General Hospital.
“On getting to Igando, he was pronounced dead.”
Residents described Yemi as a violent man who had on several occasions attacked youths in the area.
While lifting up his shirt, Waheed said, “You see this scar on my chest. It was a stab wound inflicted on me by Yemi.”
Our correspondent, who visited Saheed’s mother’s house, learnt that he was her youngest son.
The mother, Isiwatu, while weeping profusely, said she was pained that she did not live to reap the fruit of her labour.

May Day tragedy: Fresh Abuja blast kills 30

Scene of the blast

Barely three weeks after a bomb blast killed over 71 persons in Nyanya, a suburb of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, another explosion claimed about 30 lives on Thursday evening.
The blast, which was believed to be a suicide attack, occurred around 8:45pm when a bomb-laden car exploded at the Karshi Taxi Park, a few metres from where the April 14, 2014 explosion took place.
Eyewitnesses told The Punch that 25 bodies were taken to the Maitama District Hospital, Asokoro, four corpses were dropped at the National Hospital while one body was taken to an unidentified hospital in Nyanya.
Scores of injured people were also evacuated by ambulances to different hospitals for treatment.
But a statement co-signed by the Head, Public Relations, NSCDC and NEMA Press Officer, Emmanuel Ezekiel, said that 10 bodies had been deposited in the mortuary while 13 unconscious persons were receiving treatment in different hospitals.
It added that other injured victims were being attended to by medical personnel, urging  members of the public to avoid hindering rescue efforts.
“While security agencies have condoned off the area of the explosion this evening in Nyanya, Abuja, response agencies have moved injured victims to hospitals and at least 10 lifeless bodies have been deposited in the mortuary while 13 unconscious victims are receiving medical attention in different hospitals in Abuja. Other injured victims too are being attended to.
“The public are urged to cooperate with security agencies and avoid rushing to the scene to guard against hampering the efforts of the various agencies working together to ensure public safety,” the statement said.
Security sources said the perpetrators of the blast might have planned to leave the explosive-laden car at the motor park overnight so that it could be detonated on Friday (today) for maximum effect, but the bomb accidentally went off, killing the driver and other innocent people.
A Nyanya resident, who simply identified himself as Lambert, said he was walking along the road when he heard a loud blast which shook the area and sent everyone scurrying in different directions.
He said, “I went to the park, but the scene was alight with burning vehicles and there were corpses of people on the ground as well as dismembered bodies; there were body parts on the ground including hands, and heads. It was a gory sight and I had to leave the scene.”
Meanwhile, NEMA has called on FCT residents to donate blood to assist victims of the blast.

Abducted School Girls Sold To Islamist Fighters Abroad At $12 Each

A community leader in Chibok, claimed the girls abducted by suspected members of the Boko Haram sect had been sold as wives abroad.

According to Pogo Bitrus, leader of a Chibok elders group, the captured girls are being offered to Boko Haram fighters at $12 each.
Bitrus said that locals had been tracking the movements of the hostages with the help of “various sources” across the northeast.
“From the information we received yesterday from Cameroonian border towns our abducted girls were taken into Chad and Cameroon,” he said.
The girls were then sold as brides to Islamist fighters for 2,000 naira ($12) each, Bitrus added.
Meanwhile, parents of the abducted girls slammed the government on Tuesday over failure to rescue scores of schoolgirls kidnapped two weeks ago by Boko Haram Islamists.
“May God curse every one of those who have failed to free our girls,” said Enoch Mark, whose daughter and two nieces were among the more than 234 students abducted from the Government Girls Secondary School in the Chibok area of northeastern Borno state.
The attack was one of the most shocking in Boko Haram’s five-year uprising, which has claimed thousands of lives across northern and central Nigeria.

Amaka Igwe, one of Nigeria’s foremost film producers, writers, directors and a leading player in the motion picture industry, is dead.
The news of her death which came to many as a shock, was contained in a statement issued Tuesday in Lagos by The Nigerian Entertainment (NET).
The statement said that Amaka died on Monday night in Enugu after a brief illness.
Confirming the death to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Tuesday in Abuja, Mr. Agility Onwurah, Chairman, Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Abuja Chapter, said Amaka’s demise was a big blow to the Nollywood industry.
“Amaka had gone to Enugu in company of her husband for pre-production of a new Igbo soap when the sad incident occurred.
“She suffered an asthma attack and was immediately rushed to a hospital, but died before getting there.
“Amaka is survived by her husband of 21 years, Charles Igwe, three children, and an aged mother," the statement said.
Born Amaka Isaac-Ene, the deceased was an accomplished writer, producer, director, entrepreneur and teacher.
She founded the BoB TV Expo, and was the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Top Radio 90.9 FM, Amaka Igwe Studios, and the newly-launched Q Entertainment Networks.
The statement described Amaka as a visionary, and pioneer of modern Nigerian TV drama and film.
Amaka hit national limelight as the writer and producer of the award-winning TV soap, “Checkmate” and the spin-off “Fuji House of Commotion”.
Her Nollywood projects included Rattle Snake and Violated, two critically acclaimed movies that set Amaka Igwe Studios apart in the much-criticised Nollywood industry.
Her death has triggered lots of reactions from the public, with many expressing surprise at what was seen as the sudden death of the Nollywood star.
One of the earliest reactions came from former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, who described Amaka as the jewel of the Nollywood industry.
Atiku, in a tribute to Amaka, expressed shock at her demise, describing her as a major player in the Nigerian movie industry.
Atiku recalled that Mrs. Igwe's first major production: “Decrees of Fate” won four awards at the National Festival of Television Programmes in 1988.
“Amaka (Igwe) was one of the pioneers of the movie industry. Her presence in Nollywood grew to become quite impressive as she amassed a number of well received movies,” Atiku said.
According to him, her long-running TV drama serial “Checkmate” and the sitcom “Fuji House of Commotion” regularly held families spellbound.
Similarly, former Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi, noted that the death of Amaka was not only a blow to Nollywood, but to the country at large.
Condoling with the family for the loss, he said her life was inspiring in many ways, especially for teaching the lesson that virtue prevails in doing whatever one did for the greater glory of God and edification of humanity.

In its own tribute, the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), described the demise of Amaka as a national tragedy and urged the federal government to immortalise her memory in a special tribute.
In a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Mr. Emmanuel Onwubiko, HURIWA asked President Goodluck Jonathan to rename the Nigerian Films Corporation, Jos, after the late actress and producer.
